Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can be divided into two main parts. They are: on page optimization and off page optimization. On page SEO mainly focuses on the content of the site. This helps in improving the quality of a web site which makes it search friendly. On the other hand when it comes to the listings on the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs), major search engines look for links from trustworthy sites to rank up on the top positions. Building external links pointing to our web site is referred as off page optimization. A large number of good links gives a perfect base for a web site in context to SEO. The higher the number of better links, the site gets higher page rank. This always boosts the position of a site on SERPs. Many people think that they just need large number of back links pointing to there site but there are few thinks which needs to be taken care to get maximum value of each link. To build useful links that provides better positions on SERPs, following 10 points need to be taken care.
Links from relevant websites
Major search engines like: Google gives more importance to the links that are found on the websites with related contents. The links kept on unrelated websites has very less significance for SEO.
Links from higher Google page rank
Higher page ranks shows that the web site is more reliable. Therefore Google and other major search engines trust more on the back links from the sites with higher PR. Furthermore, if we get more links from the web sites with higher PR then it helps to increase the PR of our own site also.
Links without no follow attribute
Nofollow link does not pass the link juice which is useful to increase the page rank. In other words, follow link increases the credibility of the site if the link is from highly ranked site. This boosts the chances of better positioning on SERP also. However, the nofollow link can redirect traffic but it does not transfer the link juice. Therefore, it is always better to have more follow links than nofollow links from SEO perspective.
Participation on forums
Forums can be utilized as a good source of traffic. Most of the forums allow us to create signature. We can insert our web site URL on signature also. In addition to that, participation on the topics with proper content helps guiding more and genuine traffic to our sites. There is possibility to get easy viral exposures for our web sites.
Anchor text on links
One of the most important things we need to take care is the anchor text on the link. The anchor text needs to be the keywords that we are targeting. This pushes the position of a web site up on SERPs for the targeted keywords.
Links on social media
Social networking web sites are a very good source of traffic. Although they guide more traffic to our site, most of the major social networking sites provide “no follow” links only.
There are few high ranking social networking sites like: Digg with PR 8, Folkd with PR 7, Spurl and Kwoff both with PR 6 etc.
Links from highly ranked directories
Links from reputed directories like: Dmoz, Yahoo etc are highly productive. It is very tough to get listings on the major directories. Site must be submitted to the most relevant category and should adhere to all the terms and conditions.
Video links are ranked well on major search engines like Google.
Links from pages with few links
The links on a page with a lot of links pointing to several web sites is of less value as the page rank of the page is divided to all the links. Most search engines do not give importance to the sites with link farming. Therefore, the links on the pages like home page of a web site or the pages with higher page rank and less links pointing to other sites are highly valuable.
It is always good to have a one way link from a website with related content rather than exchanging links or displaying reciprocal links.
